I Never Knew This...

I never knew I had a story. I was like many men who masked their problems with “I’m okay”, “I’ll be alright”, or “I got this”--- when the reality was--- I was broken. I needed to heal. 

But, my first step to recovery was to admit that there was a problem to begin with. Here I was a father who just won custody of his three daughters not knowing what was to come next. Frightened, nervous, anxious, and vulnerable--- I needed to be the strength for our family. 

Things went awry when my youngest child was raped and molested by an older man. I almost lost myself. I was supposed to be her protector. Where was I? 

How did I let something so sinister happen to my child?

 Apologies and words of comfort offered little solace to a fractured home.

Caring for three children was difficult, which was compounded even more so, by losing my job. Where were we to get income to care for our basic needs?

 This is my job as a parent, provider, and caregiver, yet the responsibilities were shirked by lack of employment. We were forced to enter into the shelter system due to having no other resources. 

I cried, this cannot be happening to me,“This Ain’t My Life!”

And Then It Got Worse...

While in the shelter an ex-partner of mine alleged that I threatened to kill her over the phone. This allegation caused me to be arrested, fighting for my freedom. Knowing very little about court process, my rights, or litigation; I began to prepare court documents to defend myself. Lying in the shadows were my answers--- my freedom--- my salvation. I needed to be clear and free to understand the coded messages that were vehemently plaguing me. “Your honor we choose to subpoena phone records for the day of the alleged incident.” These words would be how my court case was closed with no charges or blemishes to my record...

But The Emotional Scars Would Remain... 

The blemish I suffered through these occurrences was feeling vulnerable and not knowing how to handle being vulnerable. It would take me years to understand how to use vulnerability as a strength. Men are not taught to show their feelings. We are actually taught the opposite--- to hide your feelings--- because it makes you look weak. We were brought up to emulate hero’s such as Superman, The Terminator, Randy Macho Man Savage, and The Hulk. As a result, we as men were taught machismo or machoism. Machismo meant that we could not cry. We could not express our feelings in public. We must remain a strong man at all times.

This Type of Thinking is Incorrect...

It is evident that men have feelings also. Men must be in touch with their feelings to address the inner-most problems or vulnerabilities they face. Our counterparts--- women--- do not struggle as much in this area. This is largely due to the fact that they allow their feelings to be exposed to other women when they are feeling vulnerable. 

Women have support groups, TV shows, books, songs, movies, and more offered to them to assist in their healing process. We men need to steal a page out of womens book so that we too can overcome the feeling of being vulnerable.

This is a compelling story of a Black Muslim man as he journeys through life in the Poughkeepsie area of New York. It would delight me to say that regardless of your religious background, race, gender, or geography; this story is universal. To some extent it is. Most people go through “this ain’t my life” experiences but the comparison ends there. Bilal’s experience is gritty and distinctive. And, from the perspective of a spiritual white female living in an almost homogenously white city in the west, this memoir was fascinating and eye opening.
